Downey Park Family Dentistry is excited to announce that our offices are reopen to serve our community. We are taking additional special measures to ensure the health and safety of our patients and team, and appreciate your understanding that things will look and function a bit differently in our office for the time being.
Laughing gas sedation uses nitrous oxide, which is a mild sedative that introduces feelings of euphoria and happiness when it’s breathed through the lungs. When you get laughing gas sedation, you’ll feel more calm and relaxed, and you will be less likely to feel pain and discomfort throughout your dental procedure.
It wears off quickly, too. Laughing gas stops working about 5 minutes after your treatment, so you can quickly resume your day-to-day activities or even go back to work after laughing gas sedation.
Oral conscious sedation uses a strong sedative, such as Valium, which is taken in the form of a pill before your appointment. It provides a deeper level of sedation, compared to nitrous oxide. You will feel very tired and groggy, and may even fall asleep. Even if you don’t fall asleep, it’s common to forget most or all of what happens during your appointment.
However, the after-effects of oral conscious sedation last a lot longer than nitrous oxide, usually between 4-6 hours or longer. Someone will need to come with you to drive you home after your procedure, and will not be able to immediately go back to work or resume your day-to-day activities.
Yes. Sedation dentistry is completely safe when administered by a professional like Dr. Corey Acree, and there are no serious side effects. However, you’ll have to discuss your health, medical history, medications you’re taking, and any history of past drug use with Dr. Acree before you can be sedated. This ensures that you can be sedated safely.

Dental anxiety affects millions of Americans, and can stop you from getting the dental care you need. You may even feel nervous about a procedure like a filling or a routine teeth cleaning. Sedation dentistry can help you get the care you need, and overcome feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and fear while at the dentist.
Sedation isn’t just for people who have dental anxiety. If you want to feel more comfortable at the dentist’s office during any procedure, Dr. Corey Acree can provide you with the care you need. With sedation, you can overcome issues like a low pain threshold, and even mitigate issues like an overly-strong gag reflex, keeping you comfortable during your treatment.
